The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), The University of Queensland (UQ) and iMOVE Australia have partnered to deliver ODIN PASS, the nation’s largest Mobility as a Service (MaaS) deployment in Brisbane, Australia.
Launched in mid-2021, the research trial is exclusively available to the staff and students of UQ. ODIN PASS provides participants access to a range of multi-modal mobility services with the ability to plan and book their journey through the ODIN PASS app. Available on iOS and Android, the ODIN PASS app was developed by the project’s technology partner and MaaS Alliance member SkedGo.
The trial currently has over 500 participants with a paid subscription. There are also over 2,000 participants using the multi-modal journey planning feature of the SkedGo application. The trial combines:
- Bus, train, tram and ferry services through Queensland’s TransLink public transport
- Ride hail – 13CABS
- Car share – GoGet
- E-mobility with bikes and scooters – Neuron, Beam,
- private car/motorbike and walking/cycling information – QLDTraffic
Early learnings from the trial are helping to discover new consumer insights that are shaping a sustainable business model for MaaS and what may be viable in the Australian market. The team have found that participants have both a willingness to take up the subscription offerings, as well as to use new modes of transport like shared e-mobility.
Key to getting the trial up and running has been the willingness of the transport service providers to partner with the project and share data, while maintaining privacy. The team has recognised however, that past a trial, there is a need to consider the future data model and strategy to support multi-modes and the multiple interests of the transport service providers.
The team found that offering the service over many devices created some integration difficulties and there was also a need to develop an indepedent data platform to combine certain services in order to ensure travel data was valid. This transmission of data was enabled by the data sharing agreements.
As the regulator of transport services in Queensland, TMR has found that there is a need to ensure a dynamic relationship between the transport service providers and other parties. The ever changing landscape of mobility, also meant that as new services became available that there was a need to adapt to adopt the new services.
Having passed the midpoint of the 12-month trial, ODIN PASS has processed over $150,000 AUD in mobility bundle purchases from participants.
